WCAS is competing for a chance at more than $500,000 in grant funding, including a grand prize of $100,000.

The 2012 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge is a nationwide competition for animal shelters (and their communities) aimed at getting more animals adopted or returned to their owners than ever before. This first phase is the Qualifying Heat where registered shelters compete to accumulate the most online votes from their supporters. The 50 shelters with the most online votes become the official contestants for the 2012 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge.

Online voting will begin at noon on Thursday, April 5, until midnight on Monday, April 16, by going to votetosavelives.org or vote through the Winnebago County Animal Services’ Facebook page or website. Individuals are allowed to vote once a day!

“It’s a great opportunity for all residents, businesses, cat and dog lovers, and local rescue groups to work together and save more lives in our community while educating people on adopting and being a responsible pet owner,” says Jennifer Stacy, Deputy Director of Winnebago County Animal Services. “It’s also a great motivator for the dedicated staff and volunteers at the shelter who work hard every day to save more lives. But first, we need your vote so Animal Services can qualify for the actual grant funding competition in the $100K Challenge.”

Supporters of Winnebago County Animal Services can also vote online at www.wcasrock.org. Voting takes place from April 5-16, 2012. Working together we save more lives!

Vaccinate Your New Puppy for Parvo

All pet owners should consider vaccinating their new puppy to protect it from Parvovirus. Parvo is a highly contagious and serious virus that attacks the gastrointestinal system of puppies and dogs. Puppies are most prone but adult dogs without a vaccination can be victims of this deadly disease too.

Symptoms include lethargy, lack of appetite for food or even water, vomiting, and severe diarrhea (often bloody). Often puppies and dogs die from dehydration due to vomiting and diarrhea. Death can occurs within 48 hours after showing signs. If your pet is sick, please contact your veterinarian immediately.

Three-Year Pet Licenses Available

Winnebago County residents can now purchase a three-year pet licenses if they choose to have their veterinarian vaccinate their cat or dog with a rabies vaccinate that last for three years. Contact your veterinarian for details.

Animal Services Honors
Mary Anne Aiello

A plaque honoring the late county board member, Mary Anne Aiello, was unvieled Thursday, October 2 in the lobby of Winnebago County Animal Services. Mike Wood of Louisville, KY, Mary Anne's brother presented director Gary Longanecker with a check for $21,000. The money will help renovate the outdoor dog runs and exercise areas, and hopefully, jump start other expansions Animal Services needs.

Mary Anne Aiello was known in the community as an animal advocate.

The celebration was attended by Mary Anne Aiello's family and friends as well as local elected officials and Animal Services staff and volunteers.
